Tuesday Morning, 4 days (3 ½ really!) and we will be setting off on our adventure to Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands. As Shona said about the girls, excitement amongst the leaders is at fever pitch too. I myself have been caught, several times hoping around with anticipation at locations across London.
This is my first leadership role on an international trip with Girlguiding UK. I was, however, very lucky to have the opportunity to go away as a Guide and loved every moment. I have also travelled extensively for work over the years but the ‘spectacular’ adventure we have planned is different to anything I have experienced before. It really is going to be a once in a lifetime experience.
Alongside all this excitement are also all the finishing touches. Having had a year to plan the trip we are generally in good shape. We also have two very experienced leaders at the helm, which helps immeasurably with the feeling of being organised. But even so, some elements of a trip are always last minute. For example this week for me will be spent creating lesson plans, learning songs in Spanish, charging filming equipment, making spreadsheets of data. Checking, checking again, and then once more for luck to ensure we have everything. Believe it or not, bottom of the list is to make sure I have everything I need and packing it all!
My priorities on this trip may have changed since my trips as a Guide but the nervousness and wonder at what lies ahead is still very familiar. I am most excited about being able to lead an amazing group of individuals into the unknown and to help them face the challenges that will arise. I am not looking forward to spiders, because even leaders are allowed a fear or two.
